McKenzi and Russell first met at Palais Royale on the night before Thanksgiving in 2019. After talking for a while, Russell started to leave the Albany dive bar without asking for her number. So, McKenzi ran after him and asked whether he planned to leave without taking it. He took her number—and then asked if he could kiss her.
Although Russell lived in New York City, their story did not end there. Four months later, he moved home during the lockdown, and they reconnected. Their first date took them hiking through Thacher Park, beginning a relationship filled with nature, music, and plenty of laughter.
For their Albany engagement session, we brought those different parts of their story together. We began among the flowers and greenery of Washington Park before wandering through the surrounding streets. Then, golden hour led us to the New York State Capitol. Finally, we returned to Palais Royale, where everything between them first began.

Summer Engagement Photos in Washington Park
McKenzi imagined their photographs feeling playful, intimate, and atmospheric. Washington Park gave us a natural place to begin. Its white hydrangeas, deep greenery, and pockets of warm sunlight created the soft summer setting she wanted.
McKenzi wore a flowing white dress, while Russell chose a white shirt with black trousers. Their simple palette stood out beautifully against the garden without competing with it. As sunlight moved through the trees, the photographs shifted between bright portraits and quieter, shadowed moments.
Most importantly, McKenzi and Russell brought their shared sense of humor into every frame. They held each other close, laughed easily, and settled into the session without taking themselves too seriously. As a result, the photographs feel romantic while still capturing the playful energy they share.

Wandering Downtown Albany at Golden Hour
After leaving Washington Park, we wandered through the surrounding streets toward downtown Albany. Cobblestone, brick buildings, and quiet residential corners gave the session a more lived-in feeling. Along the way, McKenzi and Russell walked, danced, and laughed together.
As golden hour arrived, we reached the New York State Capitol. The warm light stretched across its stone architecture and gave the photographs a cinematic quality. Here, the session became slightly more editorial while still leaving room for movement and genuine connection.
McKenzi and Russell sat together in the evening light and settled into a quiet closeness. Meanwhile, the city rose around them in layers of carved stone, towers, and deep shadows. The contrast made these portraits feel both intimate and expansive.
Returning to Palais Royale
We ended the evening at Palais Royale, the Albany dive bar where McKenzi and Russell first met. Returning together gave the final part of their session a full-circle feeling. This time, neither of them had to chase the other down before leaving.
For their second look, McKenzi changed into a fitted white lace dress. Meanwhile, Russell traded his white shirt for a colorful patterned button-up. The shift felt playful and perfectly suited to the bar’s familiar character.
Inside, dim light, framed photographs, and deep shadows created the moody atmosphere they had imagined. Outside, glowing beer signs and the worn stone entrance became part of the backdrop. The resulting portraits feel intimate, nostalgic, and a little unexpected.
More than five years after that first conversation, they stood together in the place where everything began. Ending their Albany engagement session there made the evening feel distinctly their own.

Albany Engagement Photography
An Albany engagement session can move through several distinct settings without losing its sense of connection. Washington Park offers flowers, winding paths, and pockets of shade. Meanwhile, the surrounding streets add brownstones, cobblestone, and the texture of everyday city life.
Near sunset, the New York State Capitol brings dramatic architecture and warm, directional light. Local bars, restaurants, and neighborhood landmarks can then make the photographs feel even more personal. Together, these places create a session that feels varied but still tells one complete story.
For McKenzi and Russell, Albany held more than beautiful scenery. It carried their history. By returning to the streets and the bar where they met, their photographs became part of the life they had already built together.
